On the afternoon of April 9th, the state of Maryland instituted the first-ever Social Media Employment Law banning employers from requesting Social Media passwords from employees or candidates.
This new law came on the trail of questions brought by the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) concerning Correction’s Officer Robert Collins. Mr. Collins was asked by the Maryland State Dept. of Corrections to divulge his passwords after returning from a Leave Of Absence. He turned them over but felt his privacy had been violated, as well as his families and friends. When the Maryland Legislature heard the D.O.C story, they took up the cause.
Since the Maryland law has been passed, five other states have pending legislation. The push has been so great, National Legistlation has been introduced by East Coast Congressional Lawmakers. Even national media giant, Bloomberg will be offering a report to subscribers updating this ever changing Social Media Policy and Law dilemma.
See the ACLU Press Room for more on the story.
